Crazy Quilt

The Arts Council of Calvert County, Prince Frederick, MD, and the Calvert Barn Quilt Trail Committee are pleased to announce the addition of the "Crazy Quilt" square on the Calvert Barn Quilt Trail. The creativity of the “Crazy Quilt” was the inspiration for Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center’s barn quilt design. The origin of the Crazy Quilt comes from artwork introduced at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Ceramics from Japan had a finish called crazing where the glaze is scattered randomly over the surface of a pot creating an asymmetrical pattern. This inspired a compositional style picked up by designers and quilters. Women personalized their quilts using remnants of significant fabrics, commemorative ribbons and stitched motifs that reflected the quilt maker’s interests. The Crazy Quilt and Annmarie Sculpture Garden have a lot in common. Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is a unique conglomeration of creative, artistic and educational events, programs and experiences and in the spirit of a traditional quilting bee, this quilt square was designed and produced by the Calvert Barn Quilt Trail and the community of Annmarie artisans including staff, artist friends, and volunteers. Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center is located at 13470 Dowell Road, Solomons, MD 20688. Visit the website at: www.annmariegarden.org .
